What is Web Design?

What Web Design is…and what it isn’t.

What is Web Design?

"Web design is the art of planning and arranging content on a website..."

This is true, but I don’t think it goes far enough. A lot of research goes into web design, too. Web designers spend a lot of time learning the kinds of visual communication a target audience responds to, from imagery to color, to the typeface (aka font) used. In fact, there are a set of basic principles in web design that are universal, and should be applied to nearly every website design.

Before we dive deep into what web design is, let’s define what it isn’t. Web design isn’t web development, although a lot of designers also build websites, often with software that makes building websites a lot easier than coding everything from scratch. This begs the question: What is Web Development? In general, web development is the process of translating a web design into a fully functioning website. Web developers build websites, which is a whole different skill set from web design. We’ll touch on what web development is in more detail in a separate blog post.
